The newly-created Digital Thread Center of Expertise (DTCOE) aims to demonstrate 2X or more acceleration in product development and production ramp timelines by deploying an end-to-end digital model thread through all phases of design, manufacturing, and in-service operation of the most complex UTC products.

The DTCOE is a three-year initiative to develop and demonstrate a fully digital product design, manufacturing, and in-service support approach. The team will develop a toolchain that supports digital continuity across different levels of model fidelity, different physics domains, and different levels of abstraction, such that the product, the manufacturing system, and the operating environment are represented. Such a toolchain will support an agile design flow for product development, the co-design and co-optimization of the product and manufacturing environment, and improved analytics of in-service product data. Within the three year timeframe, the DTCOE will apply this toolchain and methodology to a complex UTC product such as a small jet engine to demonstrate scalability, quantify value, and prepare for enterprise-wide industrialization.

As the Digital Design Flow Architect you will be responsible for the definition of the design process and workflow based on the digital thread. You will also need to work closely with the demonstrator project team to ensure its successful demonstration, and then across the UTC businesses to ensure its transition and adoption. In essence, your job is to help us pioneer the first truly modeled-based design process with simultaneous model-based design of the manufacturing environment, capture of the “as built” and “as serviced” configurations, and feedback and feedforward loops between the original design and the in-service data collected from the product. The initial application will be for an aerospace product, but we also anticipate eventual adaptation and application of the design flow to complex cyber-physical products in our commercial businesses.

Qualification:

  • Sophisticated understanding of design flows, approaches, and methodologies across multiple product domains (prior aerospace experience is a plus)

  • Demonstrated leadership of complex, cross-disciplinary technical teams

  • Breadth and depth of knowledge in digital solutions for product development process and related technologies such as commercial PLM/ALM, CAD and analysis tools, simulation data management systems, manufacturing digital systems (MES and MOMS), equipment integration technologies, workflow modeling and management and service oriented architecture and related orchestration technologies.

  • Deep knowledge and experience in prominent standards for service orchestration, tool and data integration such as UML, BPEL, BPML, WSDL, OSLC, ReqIF, 3D PMI, 3D MBD (ASME Y14.41 and ISO 16792), etc.

  • Experience in tool integration definition and workflow automations

  • Superlative communication skills, across digital and physical domains

  • Knowledge of manufacturing digital technology and environments

  • Strong executive presence, whether in the boardroom, or on a panel with startup CEOs, and demonstrated thought leadership in diverse situations

  • An unreasonable combination of risk-tolerance, impatience, optimism, empathy, and vision, and a burning desire to make a difference

Education:

  • Master’s degree in computer science, applied mathematics, or substantially related field

  • Demonstrated history of success in multiple positions of increasing scope and responsibility, with a significant duration of experience and expertise spanning the full qualifications of this role
