The Power Electronics Systems group within the United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) has an exciting employment opportunity for an Associate Director, Aerospace Power Electronics. This is a senior-level technical position within the UTRC organization, reporting directly to the Group Leader, Power Electronics Systems.

UTRC is the central research organization of United Technologies Corporation (UTC) which ensures the corporation’s technological advantage in the market and solves the toughest scientific challenges for our business unit customers. The Power Electronics Systems group, part of the Systems Department, matures and transitions power electronics and electric machines technologies that improve product performance, robustness, efficiency and cost. Power and energy systems are at the core of many automation, transportation, manufacturing, and building applications. As an Associate Director, Aerospace Power Electronics you will be responsible for providing leadership to the team in the areas of technical excellence, project management and talent development, with primary focus on aerospace applications. Specific responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead UTRC technology programs and initiatives

  • Lead engagement with business unit to influence technology strategy and funding decisions

  • Expand collaboration network, with primary focus on groups and organizations that align with DoD interests

  • Expand the team’s capability on technologies that enable next-generation aerospace applications

  • Lead the group’s aerospace power electronics strategy

  • Mentor and coach junior-level staff

  • Grow internal and external funding stream

  • Provide technical expertise to the business units as required

  • Participate in corporate-led advanced technology projects

The successful candidate must be able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary, multinational team environment focused on innovation, and partner with leading worldwide institutions (university, government agencies, national labs, professional organizations, etc.) to meet organizational objectives. The candidate will directly interact with UTRC management and both internal and external customers.

Qualification:

UTRC is looking for an outstanding individual that can bring expertise to help advance aerospace applications in several of the following key areas:

  • Hybrid and all-electric aircraft propulsion

  • Next-generation aircraft electrical power systems (architectures, components (LRUs) and enabling technologies)

  • Electromechanical actuation for mission-critical systems (e.g., primary flight control, engine control, etc.)

  • Harsh-environment electronic sub-assemblies, components (LRUs) and sub-systems (e.g., extreme temperatures, high-altitude, cosmic radiation, etc.)

  • Robust and secure electronic sub-assemblies, components (LRUs) and sub-systems

  • Advanced packaging and manufacturing of highly-integrated sub-assemblies, components (LRUs) and sub-systems

  • Active EMI mitigation techniques for power converters and sub-systems

  • Hardware-in-loop and advanced modeling/simulation techniques (e.g., 100+ kW load or source emulation via hardware)

  • End-to-end virtual design, development, validation and verification of aircraft electrical power systems, sub-systems and components (LRUs)

The ideal candidate would be an individual recognized internally and externally for her or his ability to innovate and successfully develop and transition technology to industry. Leadership in industry partnerships or initiatives, co-developed journal papers, and relevant patent portfolio is highly desirable.

Demonstrated ability to influence business strategy or government agency research direction is required. Experience capturing and executing several $1M+ programs is highly desirable.

Basic project management skills are required. Solid project management background with experience managing a multidisciplinary project portfolio or leading initiatives is highly desirable.

Aerospace-linked power electronics/systems academic or research background is required. Aerospace industry experience is highly desirable.US Person required

Education:

Minimum: M.S. in Electrical or Aerospace Engineering with at least 16 years of relevant research or industry experience.

Preferred: Ph.D. in Electrical or Aerospace Engineering with at least 12 years of relevant research or industry experience.
