Efficiency regulations continue to drive innovation in residential HVAC product development. The Department of Energy has implemented a new electrical efficiency regulation for residential gas furnaces. The new Fan Energy Rating (FER) requires a significant reduction in electrical consumptions for gas furnace blower systems. Carrier has a project to develop gas furnaces that are compliant with this regulation and maintain its industry leadership for innovative HVAC products.

The candidate will have responsibility for the following in addition to adhoc assignments as needed.

  • The summer intern position for the Carrier gas heating platform will directly support the FER project by assisting the engineering team to evaluate alternative solutions to reduce electrical consumption of gas furnaces

  • The student will be involved with evaluating and applying higher efficiency motors and alternative blower wheel geometries to achieve the goals of this project

  • This role will also involve monitoring of testing in the laboratory, collection of data, analysis of data, and exposure to basic project management

Qualification:

  • Student with an interest in interest in electrical motor efficiency and/or fluid dynamics

  • Self-starter with high level of initiative

  • Strong Microsoft Office skills (Excel and Word)

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision to achieve project goals and objectives

Education:

  • Mechanical Engineering Major who has completed sophomore or junior year with a 3.0 minimum GPA
