Description:

The ideal candidate will have experience in the design and development of residential gas furnaces. Strong knowledge of combustion systems, blower systems, control systems, and other related furnace components is important. In this position, you will be responsible for developing and applying gas furnace combustion technology to ensure compliance with regulatory emission requirements and equipment reliability targets. You will also serve as a technical expert and mentor to more junior engineers.

In this role, you will interface with product development engineers, lab technicians, model makers and designers. You will also be collaborating with members from other functional groups such as Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality, Sourcing, Suppliers, and Advanced Technology Development.

The candidate will have responsibility for the following in addition to adhoc assignments as needed

  • Effectively communicate verbally and in writing with diverse audiences including but not limited to; junior engineers, cross functional team members, global suppliers, and external customers including service managers and technicians

  • Will contribute to their team or department by applying their knowledge of one or more functional areas

  • Applies in depth knowledge of Mechanical Engineering

  • Development of test procedures to evaluate new designs

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Will be responsible for a complex component or part of a larger project

  • Works without direct guidance or direction from others

  • Will act as coach and mentor to junior engineers to help develop their technical ability and provide technical project guidance

  • Will be professional and capable of advancement with further experience and skill enhancement

Qualification:

  • Strong cross-functional team experience.

  • Industry, agency, and regulatory knowledge of residential gas furnaces requirements.

  • Understanding of Industry-wide accepted system engineering tools

  • Experience in the development of residential gas furnace (or related appliance) combustion and related combustion hardware.

  • Experience with pre-mixed combustion systems and their challenges.

  • Ability to write technical, reliability, and quality specifications.

  • Experience working in a team environment with support groups (product quality, testing, marketing).

  • Intermediate level skills with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Project.

  • Organized with strong attention to detail, while managing multiple priorities.

  • Proven ability to implement continuous improvements and standardize processes.

  • Capacity to self-direct/motivate with a vision toward overall product goals.

  • Heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and mechanical and thermal fatigue knowledge and experience.

  • Model Based Development (MBD) experience is preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Support UTC ACE initiatives for continuous improvement.

  • Comply with the EH&S Policy and applicable regulatory and company EH&S rules and requirements

  • Report to supervision, conditions or practices that are either unsafe or that may adversely impact the environment, to ensure prompt resolution of potential hazards

  • Attend scheduled EH&S training program

  • Actively support the organization’s efforts to meet or exceed EH&S goals and plans

Education:

  • The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and minimum 3 years of prior relevant experience (related to residential gas furnace or similar appliance development).
